Screen 1 / Icelandic Television Company

SMAIS serves as a vested interest party in many areas of the entertainment industry.  This includes lobbyism for laws and regulations (of copyrights), fighting the state controlled censorship issues and collaborating on various issues for the interest of the local members.  SMAIS also generates all box office figures for theatrical admission in Iceland (weekly top 20 box office list can be found here):

For the last few years SMAIS has been working in close partnership with Logmenn Laugardal law firm.

In the past few years its main concern has been in the region of parallel import, conventional hard good piracy (both sell-thru and rental) and public performances on protected material in areas such as schools, organizations etc.  However, with the development of technology and high bandwidth, Iceland (like other Nordic countries) has foreseen a great threat of growing Internet piracy (mainly illegal downloads and file-sharing) and it is generating considerable alarm in the local audiovisual community. As Iceland has the highest computer literacy in the world and the highest access to internet per household in the world (79% of homes were connected to the internet in December 2002), it becomes obvious that the threat of the internet generates large concern for local distributors. Due to this development, and others, SMAIS has dramatically increased its focus against internet piracy.

SMAIS is a partner of MPA (Motion Picture Association) – coordinating its effort to those of MPA and attending seminars and conferences held by MPA. This includes also a level of cooperation with Worldwide Internet Enforcement in order to initiate appropriate notice and takedown procedures.

SMAIS, with the rest of the Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark) have joint together in a co-operation called NAPO (Nordic Anti-Piracy Organizations).  Whereas the law and regulations in the Nordic countries are similar and computer usage and bandwidth are high in all countries, this co-operation focuses on helping each other out in the fight against internet piracy.
